Kuliax News 23.12.2007

Hello supporters of Kuliax Project, long time no see. It’s been a long time since our development progress was began slower and slower :-) We just want to report some news about our activities that happened while we weren’t writing a post in this blog.

We have been invited to two (2) events in the same date on November 18, 2007. The first event was Seminar Open Source and VOIP at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), one of our developer was the speaker on the topic of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Actually, he didn’t present some kind of “FOSS common-presentation” but he rather chose broader and “down-to-earth” topic, that is Open and Free (as Freedom) Technology.

In our session, we’ve just shared relatively new status and paradigm of technology today and tomorrow, but of course we didn’t leave the foundation topic of FOSS out. We showed people some history of technologies which came from educational environment in the world and dealt with FOSS, also some info, benefit and use FOSS in embedded device, projects like One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), Android, and all things that use Linux inside them which we sometimes didn’t recognize its involvement.

kuliax-devel Continues

Happy to be here and write a posting. It’s been a while since the last post of announcement sub project Kuliax Kernel. Some development progress of Kuliax that deal with schedule, communication, and the like changed, mostly because our developer, stwn, has moved to Bandung, continuing his study. As we all know, he played some and maybe most of Kuliax development management sides from coordinating, communicating, hacking, provocating, …

stwn reported to us, he is now in stable-enough condition. He already got a place to sleep and hack. This week he has a spare time to go to Jogja, packed his things, and will bring them to his boarding house in Cisitu Indah, Bandung. Of course we had a talk about his current status and discuss our next development steps.

The point of this case is we still need a leader or so called “benevolent dictator” but we must have a system that “always” running when the “dictator” is not around. The question is how?

Sub Project: Kuliax Kernel

Another good news, we have created new sub-project: Kuliax Kernel. The tasks are tinkering with Linux kernel, dealing with patches, optimization, package building, new kernel features test, and also considering new technology in Linux world to be implemented in Kuliax kernel.

If you ask us “why you created this new sub project?”, the answer is we all know that tinkering with kernel is somewhat time-consuming and need effort more than just compile :-)
Our first member for this sub project is just stwn and you can find its page for 7.0 in http://kuliax.org/project/kuliax-7.0_kernel. To be the member of it is not decided yet. We need a procedure to work on it, yes a documentation.

Kuliax 7.0RC1 Delayed

Kuliax 7.0RC1 release is delayed, due to technical issues for its readiness. We knew that the schedule is subject-to-change, but we should do our best to stick with it.

We have been always trying to provide foundation for developmentĀ  team andĀ  strive to reach our goal. We are heading on it, although we may say it is hard to do the development: managing community and collaboration in distributed way. But at least we have learned something everyday, and of course we will fix all of “bugs” we found. Give us a hand if you want to, we are open for new community members in our development team.

Help Wanted

Kuliax Project has been developing Kuliax 7.0 and has some projects that need a help from Linux/FOSS community. If you want to give a hand please read a simple page HOWTO Get Involved in Kuliax or Get Involved.

FYI, Kuliax is a complete Linux LiveCD distribution developed for desktop, research, and development use, especially in academic world. Kuliax is a community project and open for people to join in and contribute.

We hope Kuliax Development will catalyze and generate:

  • Linux/FOSS developers, specifically Kuliax and Debian
  • Local resources and community, so people always find many local sources and make use of them to grow each area in the world
  • Some members in the community produce applications and sub-distribution for extending and spreading Linux/FOSS

We are always waiting and welcoming for your contribution.

Kuliax Back from BOSSS

Bali Open Source Software Seminar (BOSSS) is an FOSS event held in Denpasar, Bali from 2nd to 4th August 2007, organized by Komunitas Software Merdeka (KSM) Universitas Udayana (UNUD). Kuliax Project was invited to speak at that seminar on the topic of Developing Academic Freedom based-on Open Source that covered developing open source from campus, better education with open source, and FOSS for education.

Kuliax News 30.07

We have some news to tell you, most of them are from our development line. We listed them below for easy reading.

  • Our RAM 256 MB was back to our development machine, this is great! Thank you Visipro for fixing our RAM, we’ve tested it and it run well. No more error messages, no md5sum checksum errors, no error reports by memtest86+. If you want to know the story behind it, read RAM Problem and fsck.ext3, badblocks, memtest86+.
  • We’ve created some additional mailing lists in googlegroups: kuliax-devel dedicated for Kuliax development, kuliax-commits for Kuliax SVN commits, and kuliax-bugs for reports from our Bugtracker. The last one are being reconstructed and built, just wait a day or two.
  • Live chat and support via IRC as a communication channel will be our first place, beside mailing lists, to discuss everything inside Kuliax. Wanna talk and discuss with us? just join #kuliax at irc.freenode.net. If you use Gaim/Pidgin and don’t know how to connect to our IRC channel, read this page.

For all member of development team, please help me to setup, fix, and update our software infrastructures.
