Kuliax News 23.12.2007
Hello supporters of Kuliax Project, long time no see. It’s been a long time since our development progress was began slower and slower
We just want to report some news about our activities that happened while we weren’t writing a post in this blog.
We have been invited to two (2) events in the same date on November 18, 2007. The first event was Seminar Open Source and VOIP at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), one of our developer was the speaker on the topic of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Actually, he didn’t present some kind of “FOSS common-presentation” but he rather chose broader and “down-to-earth” topic, that is Open and Free (as Freedom) Technology.
In our session, we’ve just shared relatively new status and paradigm of technology today and tomorrow, but of course we didn’t leave the foundation topic of FOSS out. We showed people some history of technologies which came from educational environment in the world and dealt with FOSS, also some info, benefit and use FOSS in embedded device, projects like One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), Android, and all things that use Linux inside them which we sometimes didn’t recognize its involvement.

Bali Open Source Software Seminar (BOSSS) is an FOSS event held in Denpasar, Bali from 2nd to 4th August 2007, organized by Komunitas Software Merdeka (KSM) Universitas Udayana (UNUD). Kuliax Project was invited to speak at that seminar on the topic of Developing Academic Freedom based-on Open Source that covered developing open source from campus, better education with open source, and FOSS for education.
We are happy to participate at that event along with AWALI, Mambo, and Government of Jembrana. Thank you KSM UNUD for the invitation and keep the spirit of FOSS!

- Live chat and support via IRC as a communication channel will be our first place, beside mailing lists, to discuss everything inside Kuliax. Wanna talk and discuss with us? just join #kuliax at irc.freenode.net. If you use Gaim/Pidgin and don’t know how to connect to our IRC channel, read this page.

XSS Vulnerability Fixed
We had a notification from DokuWiki when we logged in to wiki in kuliax.org on July 19, 2007. It told us that there was a XSS vulnerability discovered in DokuWiki and we should read the bug report for manual fix or upgrading the current version.
Actually the vulnerability is discovered in spellchecker backend and affected all version to 2007-06-26, even when spellchecker is disabled. But we’ve just known from the bug report that the vulnerability only exploitable with IE browser because of its broken MIME handling.

Kuliax.org Down?
We had a problem in our hosting site on May 12-13, we could not access kuliax.org and Iceweasel/Firefox always said “Firefox can’t find the server at kuliax.org.”. We had reported the problem to the admin of our hosting, and he said he could access kuliax.org from his office. The weird thing, we also couldn’t visit kuliax.org in some Internet cafes as well.
The admin gave us an option to move our site from IIX to North America. Before doing that, we had tested the site located in there, and it was fast enough, but not as fast as the old one. As long as it “fix” the problem, we are all happy with it. So we planned to pack and the admin said he will help backup our files and databases.
After we reported the problem on that day, it fixed on May 14! the question is do we need to move to the new hosting site in America? ![]()

Kuliax 6.0 on InfoLINUX
Kuliax 6.0 has been included on the Test and Review of InfoLINUX (IL) magazine, March 2007 edition, along with the ISO image on its DVD. We had a time to read the magazine, and found that Kuliax Rating given by IL is 8.2, with each testing values: Functionality 7.0, Features 8.0, Userfriendliness 9.0, Documentation 8.9, but these values might be subjective for IL. We guessed, before read IL, Kuliax 6.0 will have a small point at Documentation.
Luckily, logo, “Bringing Linux to Campus” tag, and blue theme of Kuliax 6.0 are on the cover of IL’s bonus DVD. We were expected that Kuliax 6.0 will be the boot-distro for the DVD, and it was not. IL still use DSL 3.2. No problem, after all, we always thankful and take all one of the good opportunities: publishing online or offline and distributed over Indonesia.
With the title “Lokal Ok Loh” on the section of Test & Review, there are some screenshots taken for each sub-section; Hardware, Distro, Software, and Books. Kuliax 6.0 screenshot displayed represent Distro dan half of the “introductory” page point out Kuliax as local product for education, beside PC Linux 2006.
